A confidence monitor is a downstage screen that faces speakers, MC, or musicians who are performing on stage. Unlike a teleprompter, a confidence monitor typically does not scroll but rather serves as a point of reference for songs, recitals, or presentations that have been previously set up.
Some performers often use an iPad to assist with lyrics or prompt while standing on stage. This type becomes popular for many following reasons. While using iPads as a confidence monitor is very convenient, it still has several drawbacks. Because the screen of an iPad is quite small, it must be placed close to the performer. The tablet may be directly positioned between the speaker and the audience. They’re like smartphones, which can sometimes be interrupted by another app or pop up which can often happen at unexpected moments.
This setup is to put large screen monitors along the front of the stage. This is another easy and inexpensive way to show needed information to MCs or presenters on stage. The screens are usually connected using long cables from the mixing booth and utilize powered HDMI splitters. However, HDMI transmission can be vulnerable to signal interference when having to run long distances. However, the biggest downside is the back of the computer monitors which most people sitting in the seats know what these are if they are not hidden carefully.
There often are video screens on sides of the stage or behind the presenter that allows the audience to follow the slides. Some presenters can use these screens as their reference to help them control the presentations. While this method may seem not to be popular, it still has some benefits. Although there is no monitor facing the presenters, it ensures that slide on stage are in sync with what the audience is looking at. However, because of the positioning to the side or behind the stage, this style is mostly limited to corporate presentations where the presenters have to point or interact with the images on the screen.
This type of confidence monitors are typically very large (at least 1.2 meters), and are positioned behind the audience. This setup is straightforward, as there is only one monitor. They are mounted like a home television, using available brackets to hang. The input is an HDMI cable connect to a mixing booth, where a controlling computer is located. Despite the ease of installation, this type of confidence monitor can distract the audiences if the auditorium has a wide-angle seating arrangement. People sitting in the lateral sections will can prompts, lyrics, and timing cues, which can make the performances on stage become less exciting.
